About Us

Dogs Deserve Better works to give

forgotten dogs a better life.

Dogs Deserve Better of Northern Virginia is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping dogs in distress, especially those living on chains, in confinement, or in abusive situations. We rely on a network of local volunteers to transport and provide temporary foster homes for these deserving dogs, and work with adopters in the Washington, DC metro area to find them permanent, loving homes.

Our mission is to provide a better life for abused, neglected, and abandoned dogs, work to address the root problems of animal overpopulation, and improve animal welfare. We accomplish this through legislative advocacy, promoting spay and neuter, educating communities on animal welfare, and the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs in distress.

We want to give a voice to these dogs who can’t speak for themselves. As days become years, many of these forgotten dogs spend their entire lives trapped in the same 10-foot radius, unable to seek shelter or protect themselves from danger. They are sentenced to a life of isolation, living without respect, love, medical care, and sometimes even basic nourishment, when all they want is to be part of a family.

It’s sad and unthinkable, but it’s true, and it’s happening in your community every day.

It is never OK to chain or confine a dog for life, or to alienate them from the world. They deserve better, and as the caretakers and domesticators of these animals, we have the obligation to provide for them.

There are a number of ways you can get involved to help the dogs in your community. If you see a chained dog or dog who spends all of their time outside alone, you can take action. You can choose to adopt a dog in need instead of going to a breeder. You can spay or neuter your dog to help address the overpopulation problem, and educate your friends and family about the importance of animal welfare.

As an all-volunteer non-profit, all of our resources go directly to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs. It takes a lot of money, time, space, and collective effort to rescue responsibly, and we always need help. Rescue is only possible through a network of volunteers, and we rely on donations and support from our community to continue our work on behalf of the dogs. If you can foster a dog, volunteer your time and skills, or donate funds or supplies, please let us know.
